The Milk Route
Lovers of ecological tourism and landscapes
with mild and cold weather, lovers of agro tourism and catholic
pilgrimages, such as going up to Father Marianito's sanctuary in
Angostura, cannot miss the opportunity to see and go through Antioquia's
North subregion.
Milk production, pleasant country feeling, diverse climates almost
all of them have mild and cold temperatures, and continuous natural
landscapes, beautify this zone, where 17 municipalities wait for
you to offer the best of each one.
This subregion is on top of a plateau which interweaves landscapes,
architecture, friendly people, and snuggly hotels for those who
want to enjoy a longer stay. It is named The Milk Route and Agro
tourism and this is because of the main economical activity in the
majority of its municipalities.
Once you leave Medellín, you advance to the small town of
San Cristóbal and travel on the well known Sea Road. In this
path, one may enjoy an almost complete panoramic view of the capital
of the Department of Antioquia. Another option is to cover the same
route but from the inverse, starting in the North Highway and near
Barbosa, begin going up to Donmatías, through the Coast Road,
the known North Route.
In the first cited route one has to abandon the Sea Road from San
Cristóbal, go through San Felix, perfect place and known
for handgliding. The ambience begins to change: from a transited
road to a more cozy one, with a continuous offer of typical cuisine
restaurants. The eyes can amuse themselves with plateau landscapes
and its cattle herd.
Bovine cattle, and therefore milk cattle are the owners of vast
quantities of fields in this subregion. From these fields, food
for thousands of families is derived, and the most important milk
companies of the department are settled here. This is why this route
is known as The Milk and Agro tourism Route.
The temperature, in relation to Medellín, descends various
degrees. Its average temperature is around 18ºC, which makes
the typical clothing from the region have to use more clothing to
cover up from the cold weather.
The first municipality to welcome you is San Pedro de los Milagros.
In this place, it is a good idea to visit some milk farms so you
can taste the cheese and milk of the region. For architecture and
tourist places, it is a good idea to take a look at the Señor
de los Milagros temple; it demands a closer look at the paintings
on its ceiling.
When you are on your way out of San Pedro, you will see Entrerríos.
The huge stone in the small town of El Peñol welcomes you
and it is an option for you to make a pause on the way. Process
of industrialized wood is shown and mushroom production for human
consumption in agroindustrial complexes located in Llanos de Cuivá.
Close to this place one may find another municipality, Belmira.
It is known for its rainbow trout, one of its economic symbols,
and where it is easy to find a place to practice fishing. Therefore,
one may delight oneself in dishes where fish is a must. Its capacity
to produce trout is thanks to the weather that surpasses 1800 meters
above sea level. Furthermore, besides its moors and high elevations
that surpasses 3000 meters above sea level, it gives this sector
the name of the Moors and Trout Route.
Rivers and streams surround this zone, long path walks are safely
kept by trees that recreate ecological forests and trails. This
trip offers fresh air and a visit to the view balconies of the Río
Grande II dam, where among mountains and silence, it is protected
as a water reservoir.
Mornings which are seen from the plateau that holds up the municipality
of Santa Rosa de Osos, considered as the most representative of
the subregion, cannot be missed. They are allusive to the celebration
of its festivities; at the same time, it is a spectacle for those
who prefer tranquility.
Santa Rosa's neighbors are Gómez Plata, Carolina, and Guadalupe.
All of them are close to water streams, such as Guadalupe River,
which motivated the generation of hydroelectric dams such as Troneras
or Miraflores.
Gómez Plata is famous because of its cable cart, with a path
that is considered the steepest in Latin America. It is located
in the small town of El Salto; it is the same place where you may
observe Guadalupe's jump, the river's water fall.
On the other hand, religious traditions are proofs of the quantity
of churches that make up the urban and rural areas of each municipality
in the North of Antioquia. This allows for everyone to notice different
historical moments in its constructions.
This tradition has generated the Faith and Cultural Route, in which
its main attraction is shown in Angostura, where one may see up
close what did Father Marianito do and how. He was beatified by
the Pope John Paul II in the year 2000.
Father Mariantito, who was born in Yarumal in 1845 and died in Angostura
in 1926, was assigned in life and now, after his death healing powers,
prophecies, clairvoyances, and people who testified miracles, as
a result, John Paul II proceeded to beatified him.
But the subregion is also rich in religious architecture, with minor
basilicas in San Pedro de los Milagros, Santa Rosa de Osos, and
Yarumal, among other churches of the same beauty.
On the other hand, antique bridges, homes where memorable characters
tell the story of Antioquia, plazas, and parks which attend tourists,
are the perfect excuse to go to Donmatías. In this municipality,
known for its confection workshops, it offers natural landscapes,
its neogothic church, a calm walk, and kindness to its visitors.
The Milk Route also takes one to the Alto de Matasanos, a traditional
place to do handglinding. Descending to the Aburrá Valley
begins. The entrances to return to the City of Medellín are
Barbosa, Girardota, Copacabana, and Bello.
Each natural and architectural attraction, which enriches the everyday
life of these municipalities, is another reason to enjoy from its
high and cold mountains. In the North of Antioquia there is an option
for tourism in the country, with the production of milk and dairy
products, ecotourism, adventure, and spiritual introspection, all
of these are ideal for those moments in which one wishes to change
activities.
