The Sun and Fruit Route

The colors and flavors of the fruits, the joy of the people that wait for you in the West of Antioquia, the Cauca River, the Western Tunnel, the historical Santa Fé de Antioquia, the sun, and the pools, plus what you may do for fun in this trip, it is the first provocation to start this journey.

Once you have at the tip of your fingers everything that you may need for this type of journey: sunglasses, caps, light or sportive clothing, sandals, camera for good memories, and of course, with the best company, you will not need anything more. All the municipalities that await for you have all the services in hotels and inns, food, day and night excitement.
The Western Tunnel, Fernando Gómez Martínez, is the one in charge of opening the doors to this marvelous land. It is the most extensive in Latin America, 4,600 meters long, it is only 15 minutes away from downtown Medellín, and it situated the valley of the Cauca River just one hour away from the Antioquian capital.
The new road which accompanies the Tunnel, the road junction Guillermo Gaviria Correa, shortens distances and it leaves in the memories the curvy roads that one had to travel to descend from the Alto de Boquerón to the Cauca River.
In the new route everything is to be visited, great vast of typical restaurants which await to attend you with the best service and sales of fresh fruits that will be a delight to your palate. While you continue to descend, one starts to feel the increase of the temperature and the vegetation also begins to change.
The first destiny is San Jerónimo, municipality that may be seen by far for its white church tower. This tower pops-up in the middle of green trees that surround it. The typical fruits of the region are offered through out its road. The tamarind, a sweet and sour fruit, is common in the zone and represents a delicacy to almost all visitors.
As a tourist vocation, the West offers a wide variety of hotels. Hostels, inns, hotels, recreative farms, places to rest, to stay, and to take pleasure in the natural goodness of the West are frequent in all the area.
In Sopetrán, the other traditional municipality of the West, the agriculture is quite obvious. This is why it is famous its celebration of the Fruit Festival. It also has numerous of zones or ecological parks perfect for camping in the shores of the Cauca River, a more rudimentary and adventurous contact for those who look for more liberty or economy. And one may not pretend to not know that at night, the town becomes very attractive for its parties, and this is why there are great quantities of bars and night clubs for those hours of entertainment.
A museum that speaks for its self, each time that you decide to enter it by some of its stone streets, is the city of Santa Fé de Antioquia, a good sample in the department of Antioquia of colonial and republican architecture. Also, one visits the Mother City, municipality that for many years was the most important in Antioquia, its first capital before transferring this condition to Medellín.
In Santa Fé, its churches, homes, museums, and hotels have their doors open for curious tourists to walk in and listen to its occupants talk about their lives and of the former inhabitants. These places and its stories have become a reason of pride for its dwellers.
The history is also shared, and municipalities such as Santa Fé de Antioquia and Olaya, who maintain their presence on the Cauca River, are witnesses of more than one hundred years, the Western Bridge, hanging monument that evokes the
engineering deed of José María Villa. A century after, the firmness of its brick, steel, and wood structure allows hundreds of visitors to drive or walk through the bridge.
To go and come by the Cauca canyon, border its riverbed where the river transits only 550 meters above sea level, to see its discrete movement across it, it is one of the recommended experiences in the West.
The short streets of the municipality of Olaya and its small town of Sucre, both perfect for fishing, are a pair of populated places where they see life pass by and where it is famous for its manual elabo-rations of esterase. Its churches and music around the towns becomes the host. In this ambience one wants to taste something refreshing, such as fruit juices of the region or cover one self under the shade of a tree, witnessing hundreds of stories of generations that have lived here.
Fishing is another common option in the West. In Olaya, for example, it is easy to do this in El Charco and El Salto Streams, which lead to the Cauca River, and from this one, restaurants provide themselves with the most exquisite fishes.
The subregion of the West unites Urabá with the Aburrá Valley. In this same way one may find a coffee town named Buriticá, of mild weather and neighboring town to Santa Fé de Antioquia and Olaya.
It has as a great attraction, the Ecological and Anthropological Park "Alto del Chocho". One may walk various paths in its mountains and fish in its streams. It is also famous for couples to entrust themselves to "San Antonio de Buriticá", patron of the municipality and saint of couples in love.
Liborina is also known as being part of the towns that are in the West. Here its water streams are famous, where one may fish like in any other part of this zone, and one may take pleasure in relaxing and be part of conversations in any of the parks of the municipality.
West is synonym of sun, fun, rest, Cauca River, adventure tourism…municipalities full of people that stay attentive to the arrival of tourists to be guided, to answer to any call, to establish a conversation, and to make your stay more amusing, people that wait for you to come back.
